preventing the transmission of diseases to them.
Therefore as a precaution no one is allowed to touch or handle
any of our puppies until the week of puppy pick up, after one round of vaccinations.
 We take every precaution
to make sure that our puppies are not exposed
to any kinds of disease or parasites that you may carry on your
shoes or even on your hands.

     Signs of an ethical breeder:

No matter where you decide to get your next family member, below are some things we believe everyone should look for:

  • Breeders should be actively involved in some aspect of AKC competition; comformation, hunt tests, rally, CGC, etc.

  • Ethical breeders will ALWAYS offer a WRITTEN Health guarantee, outlining their and your, responsibilities for the new puppy. If they refuse to offer a WRITTEN contract (verbal is worthless), look elsewhere for a puppy.

  • Breeders should always be able to show you Health Certificates on all breeding stock; including OFA Hip, OFA Elbow and OFA Heart reports; a CNM, EIC and PRA clearance as well. If the breeder does not know what these clearances are, or cannot produce the paperwork, odds are the tests have never been performed. Programs advertising pedigrees with "screened" dogs are not saying "passed ", or "failed", only "screened".....this does not mean that a test has been performed or passed. "My vet ok'd the x-rays" is not acceptable! There is really no excuse why anyone breeding dogs today would not have ALL six of these tests performed and PASSED PRIOR to any breedings.

  • Programs offering "high-drive", or "performance" litters are most likely breeding Field Labradors and ignoring the most important aspect of the Labrador breed, TEMPERAMENT. Labradors are supposed to be calm, personable, mannerly sporting dogs, NOT hyperactive prey-driven  dervishes!

  • Breeders should have one or two breeds, at most. Ethical breeders will never produce "hybrids", or cross a Labrador with another breed.

  • Animals should be clean, active, well-cared for and socialized. Breeders should be willing and eager for you to see the dogs and premises.  Animals who are only allowed "out" for breeding or performance tests are not going to be representative of the breed.

  • Breeders should offer advice and be knowledgeable about nutrition and supplements. They will know what works best for their lines, however, guarantees should not be contingent upon feeding a certain food or being on a certain supplement.

  • Reputable kennels will most likely have a waiting list for puppies; they will ask numerous questions to make sure puppies go to the best homes possible.

  • Ethical breeders will sell the majority of pups utilizing Limited Registration; selling or offering all puppies with Full registration (breeding and show rights) for a higher price is a  sign of a mill or commercial breeder.

  • Conscientious breeders will ALWAYS take a puppy or dog back, for ANY reason, throughout the dog's life. This makes rescue obsolete.

  •  Do you have the parents on site? May I see them? This is a bit of a trick question. You should always be able to see the mother-- but reputable breeders often don't have the father on hand. That's because the best match for any particular dog may be owned by another breeder, and the female was sent away for breeding.  Mentions of a "mated pair" or "breeding pair" may signal uninformed breeding choices.

  • Have the puppies been raised in an area devoted solely to the needs of young puppies (heat/air controlled, limited access for strangers/disease, away from drafts, loud noises/children that may startle a puppy)?  NOT in someone's basement, spare room or makeshift corner of the kitchen or back yard?

Reputable breeders do not sell puppies over the internet! They will want to phone or personally interview each puppy candidate family. They will PROUDLY list their name, address, involvement with dogs and contact information on their webstes and written communications. If you cannot find a NAME and address or general location on their website, what are they hiding?

Do you feel comfortable with this person, after all you are entering into a decade long relationship? Are you feeling intimidated or pressured? If so, keep looking!

All dogs should AT LEAST be registered/registerable with the AKC. (American Kennel Club). Breeders who ONLY register with APRI, CKC or UKC may be less than reputable, and may be banned from the AKC for questionable breeding practices.
